Get an API key
  1. Message @BotFather on Telegram and run /newbot.
  2. Copy the token it gives you.
  3. Telegram carries the token in the URL PATH, so calls look like https://api.telegram.org/bot${credential:NAME}/sendMessage.

Worth knowing

  • The token lives in the URL path, so the URL is secret-bearing and is never logged.
  • A bot cannot start a conversation. The user must message it first, or it must be in the group.
