Want a do-over, or a safe copy of the conversation before you try something risky? Rewind deletes a message and everything after it, and fork copies the chat up to that point into a new conversation ⏪
Hover over one of your messages to reveal its actions.
Click the rewind icon. A dialog tells you how many messages will be deleted.
Confirm. The message and everything after it is permanently deleted, and the message text goes back into the input so you can edit it before sending it again.
Rewind deletes the message you picked too. Its text returns to the input, so you can reword it, keep the attachments, and send it again.
If your input already holds unsent text, a second dialog asks before it is discarded and replaced by the rewound message. Cancelling leaves both the chat and your draft untouched.
Rewinding your first message deletes the whole chat: the conversation is permanently removed and the message opens in a new chat's input instead. Files the chat produced in Drive are kept.
The agent cannot be running when you rewind. Stop the current run first, then rewind.
Hover over the message you want the copy to include up to.
Click the fork icon. A new chat is created in the same workspace with the same agent, containing the conversation up to and including that message.
Continue the forked chat independently. The original stays untouched.
Fork is the non-destructive option: use it when you want to explore a different direction without losing anything.
For a bad reply, you usually want retry instead: it deletes the reply and asks the model again. See Retrying a response. Rewind and fork are for rethinking your own side of the conversation.
Rewind permanently deletes messages, including their tool activity. Fork copies messages into a new chat; it never changes the original.
