Real work rarely fits in one task. Break a big task into sub-tasks, record what blocks what, and fold duplicates into a single source of truth 🧩
A task's three-dot menu holds two submenus for linking it to other work:
Create related: spin off a new task that is linked back to this one.
Mark as: point this task at an existing one, either as Blocked by it or a Duplicate of it.
Open a task and add sub-tasks for the smaller steps it needs. Quick sub-task creation takes a title only, with no assignee field. Open a sub-task afterward to give it a status, an assignee, or dates like any other task.
The parent shows a done-out-of-total counter, so you can see at a glance how many of its sub-tasks are finished.
Sub-tasks do not appear as their own cards on the board, which shows root tasks only. If a sub-task seems to have vanished, open its parent: it lives there.
To record that one task is waiting on another, open its three-dot menu and choose Mark as, then Blocked by, and pick the task that blocks it. Once a task has at least one link, an Add dependency control appears for adding more.
Dependencies connect tasks within the same list, and idapt refuses a link that would form a loop.
A dependency is informational: it records the relationship but does not lock anything. A blocked task can still change status, so you stay in control of your own board.
When two tasks describe the same work, open one and choose Mark as, then Duplicate of, and pick the task to keep. Setting a task's status to Duplicate opens the same picker. Either way, the task's status becomes Duplicate and it is linked to the original.
A banner on the task shows the duplicate link. Click its X to clear the link. Clearing the link leaves the status alone, so a task you no longer consider a duplicate keeps the Duplicate status until you change it yourself.
