Build a scrollable data story in 5 beats. The point: [the point] One idea per beat, and each chart earns its place by making the argument move. A scroll story with five charts saying the same thing is a slideshow, and readers leave at beat two. Build toward the point rather than opening on it. The reason this format works is that the reader arrives at the conclusion a moment before you state it. Annotate directly on the charts. A legend the reader has to decode breaks the scroll, and by the time they have decoded it the argument has moved on. One self-contained HTML file that also reads sensibly with JavaScript off.

Why this works
Scroll stories work because the reader arrives at the conclusion a moment before you state it. Most fail by opening on the point and then showing five charts that say the same thing. This builds toward it, one idea per beat, annotated on the chart rather than in a legend.
