Write your positioning
What you are, who for, and what you are better than, in one paragraph.
Fill it in
What it does and who uses it today.
What they do now if they do not use you.
Three, with what each one trades away.
Your prompt
Write the positioning. [the product] What they do instead: [your instead of] Position against the real alternative, which is almost never a competitor. It is a spreadsheet, an intern, or doing nothing. A statement that positions against another product answers a question your buyer has not reached yet. Be specific enough to exclude people. A positioning statement that no potential customer would reject describes nothing, and "for teams who want to move faster" is a sentence about every product ever made. Name what you are worse at. The credibility of the whole paragraph comes from that clause. Give three variants and say what each one trades away, so the choice is visible.
Use Write your positioningOpens with everything above already filled in.
Why this works
The real alternative is almost never a competitor. It is a spreadsheet, an intern, or doing nothing, and a statement positioned against another product answers a question the buyer has not reached. This is specific enough to exclude people, and names what you are worse at.
